Great Start to WCAL Championships On Saturday the Boys and Girls Trials were held at Saint Francis. There were many excellent marks including 5 new meet records: · Bellarmine Freshman Alex Scales ran 4:23.10 in the Frosh/Soph Boys 1600 to break the 40-year old record of 4:30.90 set by Stan Ross of Serra way back in 1975. Two other Bellarmine runners (sophomores Matt Richardson and Dylan Doblar) also broke the old record. · Saint Ignatius freshman Katie O’Dea destroyed the old Junior Varsity Girls 1600 mark of 5:26.57 set in 2009 by Tatiana Baiz of Sacred heart Cathedral with a new remarkable time of 5:11.45. Freshman Carla Cornillon of Saint Francis also broke the old record. · Valley Christian junior Elena Bruckner threw the Varsity Girls Shot Put 49-7.50 (that’s 49 feet, 7 and one half inches) to break the her own old record of 44-11 set last year in the WCAL Finals. · Elena Bruckner also obliterated the old Varsity Girls Discus record of 132-09 set in 2009 be Saint Francis’ Sela Paini with a tremendous throw of 162-08 (yes, that is 30 FEET further!). Senior Ronna Stone, also from Valley Christian also broke the old record by a wide margin with a throw of 153-08. To put these marks in perspective, the best throw in all of CCS in 2014 was 136 feet - 24 feet shorter! Amazing. · Saint Ignitius sophomore Kaela Lee jumped 16-09.5 in the Junior Varsity Girls Long Jump to break the previous mark of 16-02 set by Sophie Harrison of Saint Ignatius last year. · Saint Ignatius freshman Indiana Peters tied the existing Junior Varsity Girls High Jump record of 5-00 set by Christina Szelong of Saint Francis in 2003. Complete results of the days Trials and Finals are listed here (HTML or PDF). The Finals are on Friday, May 15 starting at 2:30 at Saint Francis.
